The fate of our planet and billions of lives hangs in the balance. The decisions we make today have ripple effects that will reverberate for decades. It's time to choose a positive path to act boldly for a sustainable future.

The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) has united pioneering organizations to create a worldwide network to drive systemic shifts towards a more promising future. Its members are at the forefront, striving to redefine corporations' capabilities by actively addressing the climate emergency, rejuvenating our natural environment, and combating disparities. This endeavor aims to ensure a sustainable existence for everyone by the year 2050.

Within their "Vision 2050: Time to Transform," the organization presents a collective aspiration for a future where over 9 billion individuals can lead fulfilling lives within the Earth's ecological limits by 2050. Realizing this future necessitates widespread transformation, with the business sector playing a pivotal role in spearheading these changes across critical areas for systemic evolution.

Aiming for the green

This vision delineates the processes of systemic change and introduces a novel blueprint for corporate engagement over the next decade. Central to this blueprint are nine pathways of transformation, offering clear, actionable strategies for businesses. These pathways span vital sectors of economic activity critical to human society, including energy, transport and mobility, habitation, products and materials, financial services, digital infrastructure, health and wellness, water and sanitation, and nutrition:

  • Energy: A system of energy that is both sustainable and reliable, delivering net-zero carbon energy affordable to everyone.
  • Transportation and mobility: Transportation systems that are safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly ensure the seamless movement of individuals and goods.
  • Living spaces: Vibrant living areas that promote health and inclusivity, existing in perfect balance with the natural world.
  • Products and materials: The utilization of resources is finely tuned to meet the demands of society while simultaneously allowing the ecosystems that yield these resources to rejuvenate.
  • Financial products & services: Financial resources, along with products and services, are entirely directed towards sustainable growth.
  • Connectivity: Ethical connectivity that unites communities, boosts transparency and efficiency and cultivates opportunities for all.
  • Health & wellbeing: Ensuring the highest possible standard of health and wellness is accessible to each person.
  • Water & sanitation: Ecosystems related to flourishing water, supporting the necessities of food, energy, and public health universally.
  • Food: A food system that is both regenerative and fair, offering safe, nutritious, and healthy food options to the population.

What should businesses do?

Businesses are presented with an unprecedented opportunity to make a significant impact. With the goal to reduce global carbon emissions by half within the next decade, aligning with the objectives of the Paris Agreement to cap global warming at 1.5°C, the time to act is now. This period is also crucial for reversing the trends in biodiversity loss and addressing the pressing issue of inequality that threatens social harmony across the globe, regardless of economic status.

Vision 2050 charting the path to a sustainable future

The United Nations has aptly named the 2020s the Decade of Action, signaling a key era for businesses to step up and champion transformative change. Embracing this moment as a unique chance for positive transformation, the business community is encouraged to innovate and overcome past obstacles, leading the way toward a sustainable and equitable future.

Multinational companies hold immense power to influence, connect, and guide diverse groups throughout the global supply chain. While governments, civil society, and the public are crucial partners in building a better future, multinational corporations are uniquely positioned to lead the way. Companies that understand the interconnectedness of human well-being and planetary health will be driven to ask themselves:

  • What role do we play in creating the world we want for future generations?
  • How can we pave the way towards this sustainable future?
  • What immediate steps can we take to accelerate this transition while ensuring our continued success and resilience?

This era calls for a bold reimagining of what is possible, urging businesses to act decisively and creatively to make a lasting impact.

To effectively contribute to a sustainable and equitable future, businesses are advised to:

  1. Implement strategies to significantly reduce carbon footprints, aligning with the goal of halving global emissions by the decade's midpoint in adherence to the Paris Agreement.
  2. Develop and invest in sustainable technologies and practices that mitigate environmental impact and drive economic growth.
  3. Actively work towards reversing biodiversity loss through responsible sourcing, habitat conservation, and supporting biodiversity-positive initiatives.
  4. Address inequalities by ensuring fair labor practices, equitable opportunities, and inclusive policies within the organization and the communities they serve.
  5. Partner with governments, NGOs, and other corporations to magnify the impact on critical issues like climate change, biodiversity, and social equity.
  6. Transition towards circular economy models that reduce waste, reuse resources, and recycle materials to minimize environmental footprints.
  7. Increase transparency in operations, supply chains, and sustainability efforts to build trust with consumers, investors, and the wider community.
  8. Contribute to the health and vitality of the communities in which they operate, recognizing that business success is deeply intertwined with societal well-being.
  9. Encourage a culture of innovation that focuses on solving pressing global challenges, leveraging technology for sustainable solutions.
