Science paves the way for a brighter tomorrow

Researchers at The City College of New York (CCNY) have developed a method to increase how much information we can store in diamonds using light. They achieve this by storing different kinds of information in the same tiny spots of a diamond using lasers of slightly different colors. This technique, called spectral multiplexing, allows us to store multiple images in the same diamond.

If this method works with other materials and at normal room temperature, it might be useful for high-capacity computer applications storage.

Scientists zoomed in on the tiniest parts of diamonds and similar materials, called "color centers." These are like little flaws in the atomic structure that can grab onto light and act as a foundation for advanced quantum technologies. The researchers precisely controlled the electrical charge in these color centers using a specific kind of laser and extremely cold conditions.

This new method allowed them to write and read very small bits of data at an even finer level than possible, down to just one atom. In traditional optical memory technologies, there's a limit to how small you can make things, called the "diffraction limit." It's the smallest size that a beam of light can be focused on, and it's about half the wavelength of the light beam.

Using a beam of light for writing with a resolution smaller than the diffraction limit is not the easiest task because moving the beam by less than that limit can accidentally affect what you've already written. Typically, optical memory technologies increase their storage capacity by making the wavelength of light shorter, often shifting towards the blue spectrum, which is why we have Blu-ray technology.

The optical storage technique stands out because it sidesteps the diffraction limit by taking advantage of the tiny color differences (wavelength) between color centers that are close together, closer than the diffraction limit.

The CCNY technique achieves sub-diffraction resolution by adjusting the laser beam to slightly shifted wavelengths. This allows the beam to stay in the same physical location but interact with different color centers, changing their charges selectively. What's remarkable is that this process is reversible. You can write, erase, and rewrite data countless times.

While some other optical storage methods offer similar capabilities, it's not the usual scenario, especially when achieving high spatial resolution. Think of a Blu-ray disc as an example – once you write a movie on it, you can't erase it and replace it with another one.
