As the world’s demand for electricity rises it is becoming increasingly important to increase the diversity of supplies by using renewable sources such as hydroelectric power, wind, solar and geothermal energy alongside fossil fuels. The Smart Grid was thus born out of a need to provide a more flexible grid structure, since conventional systems fail to address the uncertainty brought about by the use of renewables, whose output depends so much on weather conditions.

The Imponet project began work in 2010 with the collaboration of fifteen companies from four countries. Its goals were to increase energy quality, to balance supply and demand, and to establish the technologies and standards necessary for better energy management and pricing, thereby improving efficiency in the grid distribution system and helping to create new self-managing infrastructures. By the time that the project was completed in 2013, the participating firms had gained a great understanding of the smart grid applications that will set the stage for significant future economic gains in Europe. By making renewable energy sources more attractive, the Imponet project reduces the need for fossil fuels and thus the environmental impact and costs of electricity production.

Innova’s role in the project

Innova’s contribution was to develop an Information and Communication Technology Integration (ICT) solution. This was used to study the data traffic used by electricity producers and distributors and enable complex data monitoring with which to study regional consumption rate predictions and divide electricity customers into groups to determine which tariff suited them best.

Innova contributed to the project by facilitating the monitoring of data, carrying out studies to help predict regional consumption rates, and clustering customers into distinct groups according to specific criteria in order to determine which tariffs to apply to them. As a result of its work with Imponet, Innova created a new Information and Communication Technology Integration (ICT) solution for use by electricity production and distribution companies.

Innova’s General Manager, Umit Atalay, said: “From the first day of its foundation Innova has always been a company that invested heavily in research and development, truly believed in international experience and cooperation, and was motivated by opportunities to implement innovative and value-added projects. We are delighted to be a part of the success of the Imponet project, and this achievement is evidence that we continue to follow the right approach. Through the project, we have been able to prepare the technological solutions capable of ensuring that the grid is working healthily, and we are proud to have developed the monitoring and analysis solutions that energy production and distribution companies will be using in the future.”
